There are many different forms of counselling, the Australia Counselling website defines advice as, “Pshyco therapy and counselling are professional activities that utilize an interpersonal relationship to enable people to develop self-understanding and to make changes in their lives.”

Counselling should be based around the interpersonal relationships between a patient and a counsellor and a client. They help their patients explore their problems and healthily discuss them while trying to help provide solutions to these issues within a set of boundaries that are created.

Psychotherapy is similar in many ways, but more based around restructuring a person’s personality and developing their insight that might help bring about change. A counsellor will help to create a set of psychotherapeutic and psychological therapies to help someone. They help to develop a person’s interpersonal skills while respecting their client’s values, beliefs, and unique characteristics.

There are often many different topics that can be covered by counsellors. From things like addiction, to adjust to change, along with anger management, stress and anxiety management, body image concerns (eating disorder, self-esteem, body image), grief and loss, gender identity, and that is just the shortlist.

What They Treat

Counsellors can help provide intervention when someone’s behaviour becomes harmful or can help if they have been in traumatic situations such as sexual abuse or domestic violence. The counsellor and patient can work together to help develop goals and plans to help empower the patient and give them coping mechanisms to help deal with their issue.

If you are having any one of these concerns, you should seek out a counsellor, making sure you find someone that is the right fit for you. Often, counselling can be covered by your insurance so you should check with your provider to give you a list of counsellors that are included. From there, you can start to look into, which might be the best to help with the concerns that you have.
